Research interests

Perioperative genomics and clinical outcomes.

The goal of this project is to investigate the relationship between the
common mutations in human genome and altered response to drugs commonly
used in anesthesia. The focus of our current interest is related to the
effects of the single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the mu opioid
receptor (MOR) and opioid-like receptor 1 (OPRL1) genes on the altered
response of surgical patients to pain and morphine analgesia. The second
topic of our research is focused on the alterations in the pharmacological
response to the anesthetic drugs metabolized by the cytochrome P450 isoform
2D6 (CYP2D6), and associated mutations in this receptor gene. The research
approach used by our group relies on the genotype screening of the patients
undergoing anesthesia and surgery, detecting the mutations in the analyzed
region of the genome, and analyzing the selected aspects of the
physiological response to surgery and anesthesia during the perioperative
period.
